“Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?” January 1 inevitably prompts contemplation on life’s bigger meaning, but limiting New Year’s resolutions to one or two that are truly important makes sticking to the plan painless. Everyone falters here and there, but simplicity means you’re more likely to press on. Another tip? Remembering your desired outcome – whether it’s a regular exercise program (and, ultimately, a fitter you!), healthy diet, quality family time, or making changes in the community – provides motivation to press on. We’re all “works in progress,” and maintaining a positive mindset keeps everything on track.
Don’t know how to get, or stay, focused? Whether your well-intentioned promises involve health, fitness, environmentalism, or supporting those less fortunate, we’ve selected some great ideas to maneuver through another year with measurable success … just like magic. (After all, we are Disney.) Now, let’s get down to the business of YOU!
Marathon running offers a total mind-body connection by testing the will as well as pushing physicality beyond its limits – just ask any runner. Building up the required stamina takes months (even years) of dedicated training. If you love Disney Theme Parks, the runDisney program offers marathons, half marathons, and other themed races for runners who want to cross the finish line with passion, personal triumph, and a touch of pixie dust.
On January 27, the Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend kicks off three days of family fitness with the Never Land Family Fun Run 5K, runDisney Kids’ Races, and the featured Half Marathon event – a 13.1-mile run through Disneyland Resort and the City of Anaheim. Walt Disney World Resort will welcome athletes February 24-26 for Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend, another three-day event specifically tailored to women.
Need more time before participating in the happiest race(s) on Earth? Pick up training pointers from Olympian Jeff Galloway, then check out the Expedition Everest Challenge at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park on May 5 and the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, August 31 through September 2, at Disneyland Resort.
If running’s not your thing, Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living program offers “play your way” activities for family fitness, including Basketball, Bike Relay, Hula Hoop Tag, Lacball, Scooter Soccer, and Water Derby, to name a few. Who said exercise couldn’t be a blast?
No amount of exercise is complete without a healthy diet – each offers its own benefits while complementing the other. The Magic of Healthy Living site also features a good-for-you broccoli bake, turkey meatballs, pita pockets, veggie pizzas, and other delish dishes easy enough for kids to prepare. And, as if yummy-ness weren’t reason enough, families that exercise, play, AND cook together experience some pretty awesome quality time.
Disney Family.com is another good source for nutritious recipes like Balsamic Pork and Apple Skewers, Crispy Turkey Tostadas, Stuffed Bell Peppers, Chicken Chili, Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, and a smorgasbord of others. Besides the basics on eating right, you’ll find everyday fitness ideas to keep the entire family active.
Are you interested in volunteer opportunities to clean beaches, plant trees, protect endangered species, build affordable housing, run a food pantry, or oversee a neighborhood garden? Disney’s rich history of conservation and environmental programs continues with Disney Planet Challenge, a project-based competition for schools nationwide, and Disney Friends for Change, an initiative that inspires kids (and all who want a cleaner, greener world) to help people, communities, and the planet – two hands at a time. From downloadable kits to gameplay for charity, the program provides creative ways anyone can take action.
Animal lovers can learn more about The Walt Disney Company’s philanthropic efforts via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, which distributes aid to conservancy groups around the globe. Reduce, reuse, recycle is the mantra for the Green Standard, a Company-wide policy that encourages employees to make changes that minimize their environmental impact.
Now striving toward excellence is not only the “Disney way,” but YOUR way. And may 2012 be filled with health, happiness, and resolutions you can keep!
