The City of Love, Disney-Style!

Disney’s first love story, the one between Walt and Lillian, had one of its major milestones in the city of love. As a young couple, the Disneys took a romantic trip through Europe. One of their major stops? Paris, of course.

So, this Valentine’s Day, take a page from Walt’s book and put a little ooh-la-la in your evening! After all, there must be a reason Disney films are filled with homages to this romantic destination. Why not give your sweetheart an evening of l’amour? With a kiss on the hand, a romantic film (or two) set in the City of Lights, and some delectable French goodies, you’ll have a Valentine’s that spells love for sure.

What to watch?

The classic choice would be “The Aristocats.” This 1970 animated hit features pampered felines, the rooftops of Paris, and a musical score hopping with “le jazz hot.” For the not-so-cat-inclined, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1996) takes you back to a Paris of an even earlier age, with gorgeous animated scenes of Notre Dame Cathedral and other beauty spots of the medieval city.

For a more modern-day look at Paris, you can’t beat Disney·Pixar’s “Ratatouille” (2007). It comes complete with a mouthwatering peek inside the world of Parisian haute cuisine.

If it’s a cinematic ode to French food you’re after, “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) has the show-stopping “Be Our Guest” number. You also can’t go wrong with “The Little Mermaid” (1989) and its French chef singing the praises of “Les Poissons” (sorry Sebastian!).

Every one of these movies features romance to spare along with beautiful visuals. You can even mix and match for a double feature to woo your Valentine a little extra.

What to eat?

Why, ratatouille, of course! Spoonful.com has a great recipe for this authentic French delight, like the one whipped up by Remy.

And for dessert, why not chocolate mousse torte? It’s a yummy (and real life) stand-in for the “grey stuff” Lumiere offers Belle. Be sure to serve your creations while wearing a printable chef’s toque  straight from “Ratatouille.”

Finish the evening with a kiss if apropos, a petite cadeau (we Americans call that a “little present”), and perhaps a promise that the coming year will include a trip to France – either via France at Epcot or by embarking on Adventures by Disney’s French itinerary, capped off with a trip to Disneyland Paris!
