Last night at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa, fans were treated to a special reception, costume contest, and screening of the upcoming film Saving Mr. Banks, an event that was practically perfect for a Disney fan. Attendees walked down a Mary Poppins-themed red carpet that welcomed retro 1960s attire, though a handful of Poppins fans were dressed as Mary herself.
As hors d’oeuvres were passed and pictures were snapped, chimney sweeps danced around the crowd spinning their brooms. The vintage-clad crowd parted as Mary Poppins and Bert themselves danced into the ballroom, accompanied (of course) by a pair of penguins. A raucous bunch of sufragettes also burst into their signature song while waving signs and asking the crowd if they were for votes for women.
Fans got to pose with Mary and Bert, or against backdrops including the Saving Mr. Banks poster, a London rooftop scene, or the carousel horses from the film.
A “Practically Perfect” costume contest was held, and five the of the best dressed guests were brought up on stage to be judged on their vintage outfit executions. It was a close call with such a dapper bunch, but ultimately a Bert-inspired bloke took the crown and won VIP seats at the night’s screening of Saving Mr. Banks at Downtown Disney.
After the reception, the group made their way from the ballroom over to the AMC Downtown Disney to see Saving Mr. Banks before its limited release December 13 and wide release December 20.
