In a shareholder meeting this morning, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger made two exciting announcements for the future of the Star Wars franchise.
Iger announced the title for first stand-alone Star Wars film: Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards and feature actress Felicity Jones. It is planned as the first film in a series of big-screen adventures that explore the characters and events beyond the first Star Wars saga, and Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (Cinderella) will write. The film begins shooting in London this summer, and is scheduled for release on December 16, 2016.
Star Wars fans also received the news we’ve been waiting for: Iger confirmed Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The eighth installment is set for release on May 26, 2017.
