J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy just debuted the teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at Star Wars Celebration, and we’re freaking out, you’re freaking out, the internet is freaking out. Get your first look at the new teaser:
The trailer opens with what appears to be an abandoned X-Wing Starfighter and Imperial Star Destroyer in the desert (is this the planet Jakku they mentioned in the panel?). Cut to a creepy, melted Darth Vader Mask as Luke Skywalker narrates how strong the force is in his family, echoing his speech to Princess Leia on Endor in Return of the Jedi. Note: someone appears to be handing someone Darth Vader’s lightsaber. After that, we get some quick shots of the new characters: Poe Dameron flying an X-Wing, Rey (whose outfit gives us some major Princess Amidala vibes), Finn (the unmasked Stormtrooper from the first teaser), and BB-8 running from an explosion, and finally we see Kylo Ren’s masked face for the first time. There are a whole bunch of new Stormtroopers marching in front of a mysterious new symbol, new Tie Fighters, and some Stormtroopers under attack, including Finn. We see a new character, a chrome-plated Stormtrooper laughing in the face of Edna “E” Mode’s advice by wearing a cape, and then our favorite, BB-8. After another shot of Rey and Finn where she offers her hand to help him up, we see a Tie Fighter chasing the Millennium Falcon fly into some kind of giant crashed ship. And then … Han Solo and Chewbacca appear for the heart-melting line from Han: “Chewie, we’re home.”
If you missed the panel, never fear: we liveblogged the entire thing for you. Episode VII in the Star Wars Saga, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, opens in theaters December 18.
