If you haven’t heard already, we’re really excited about The Muppets, the new primetime Muppet show that will air on Tuesdays this fall on ABC. If the pilot presentation is any indication, this will be a series that delightfully marries the prankish spirit of the original Muppet Show with more modern filmmaking aesthetics and technology. This is a show that gives you a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the interpersonal relationships of the various Muppets, captured in a you-are-there faux documentary style. Oh and it’s more hilarious than any network sitcom in recent memory.
All of this makes our exclusive debut of 10 images from the new series even more of a thrill. These images are a scattershot look at the antics that will be on display in The Muppets, including the wide variety of characters that includes favorites like Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Animal, Gonzo, Sweetums, and Sam the Eagle, who coexist with more obscure characters like the very sleepy Pops (the doorman from The Muppet Show), Uncle Deadly (also known as the Phantom of the Muppet Show; bonus trivia: his first episode of The Muppet Show was hosted by Vincent Price), an old Muppet character known only as The Newsman (for obvious reasons), Angel Marie (the random monster with the light) and Kermit’s new pig girlfriend Denise (who really steals the show in the pilot).
Bill Prady (a longtime Henson confederate who wrote Disney theme park staple Muppet*Vision 3D and co-created Big Bang Theory), Bob Kushell (The Simpsons), longtime Henson performer Bill Barretta and The Office director Randall Einhorn, will executive produce The Muppets, which will air on ABC on Tuesday. It will be awesome.
