Lorelay Bové Talks Lovely: Ladies of Animation Artist Showcase at Downtown Disney

This weekend, the awesome WonderGround Gallery in Downtown Disney at Disneyland will hold a special event celebrating both Disney fine art (from WonderGround, Cyclops Print Works, and Disney Fine Art) and Lovely: Ladies of Animation, the amazing hardcover book released last year, that featured artwork from Lorelay Bové, Brittney Lee, Claire Keane, Lisa Keene, Victoria Ying, and Mingjue Helen Chen. And what’s more, they will all be there signing both the book and their artwork for fans.

Artist Showcase with Lovely: Ladies of Animation is happening between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the WonderGround Gallery in Downtown Disney. If you’ve never been to WonderGround, this is a great excuse. It’s one of the coolest places in all of Downtown Disney and a must for any art collector or pop-culture enthusiast. And this event is something that you are definitely going to want to attend. All of these artists are incredible, as is their original art.

We got a chance to talk to Bové via email, who has worked at both Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Animation Studios, and has done impressive work in both traditional hand-drawn animation and computer animation. (She’s currently the art director of environments for Nathan Greno’s Gigantic.) “It has been an amazing experience to be working in both mediums, and in both studios,” Bové said. She cites legendary Disney artists Eyvind Earle and Mary Blair as her influences, which you can see in her amazing Alice in Wonderland print (that will be available from Cyclops Print Works at the event, and later on their site). She says that she chose Alice in Wonderland for her piece because it’s “one of [her] favorite movies,” and she was particularly in awe of the film’s “beautiful color and design.” When we asked what her specific memories were of the film, she cited being swept away by “the pure imagination and fantasy.” Of course, we had to ask what other Disney classics she’d love to create new artwork for, and she said Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella.
