It’s a little less than a month until everyone’s favorite blue tang swims back into theaters with Finding Dory (in 3D on June 17), and to mark the occasion one last, truly wonderful trailer has been released. If you weren’t already super excited about the movie, a sequel 13 years in the making, then this trailer will put you over the edge. It’s heartwarming, funny, and gorgeous. Suddenly, a little less than a month feels really far away.
In this hotly anticipated film, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) searches for answers to her past. I re-watched the first film over the weekend and it’s amazing how simply the seed is planted. After Dory says that short-term memory loss runs in her family, she briefly looks around for them. It’s a great joke but it’s also an insanely fertile jumping off point for the follow-up film. (You can hear a variation of that line in the trailer.) You get a taste of all the new characters, including Destiny the whale shark (Kaitlin Olsen), Baily a Beluga whale (Ty Burrell), Hank the seven-armed octopus (Ed O’Neill), and a pair of grumpy sea lions named Fluke and Rudder (Idris Elba and Dominic West).
But what the trailer does best is underline what an emotional experience Finding Dory is. Yes, it’s a fun adventure full of wonderful new characters, but it’s also just as moving as any other Disney•Pixar film. Heck, by the end of the trailer you might have a lump in your throat. So imagine what the actual movie will be like.
Finding Dory, directed by Andrew Stanton, swims into theaters (in 3D!) on June 17.
