The holidays were a slightly slow time at the office, so naturally our solution was to watch Disney movies we hadn’t seen in a long time. Or ever. Enter Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Here’s the elevator pitch: Three kids are orphaned and wind up in a small village during a war. They end up living with this woman who turns out to be an apprentice witch (gasp!), except she’s maybe not great at being a witch. She does manage to successfully turn an ordinary bedknob into a magical bedknob that makes their bed fly them off to many places. The best place, though, is an animated island called Naboombu where the gang searches for a powerful spell they can use to save ALL of England (which is a lot of people to save).
For those who are unfamiliar with this classic, we can only describe it as fantastically strange. Don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself…
The guy from Mary Poppins is in this movie too, which is excellent. But he’s a bit of a scam artist in this film. He pretends to be a magician, but that turns out not to be true. Sigh. At least his fake magic looks real cool:
Before we continue, we’ll let you watch the scene:
There’s a soccer game that makes absolutely no sense featuring a rhino who spears the ball, an elephant who’s impossibly tall, a gorilla wearing a funny hat, an ostrich who curiously doesn’t have its head in the ground, and others. And by others we mean that guy from Mary Poppins again:
We rest our case.
Now that we’ve convinced you of Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ fantastic strangeness, we’ll leave you to watch this trailer and prepare for your own viewing:
