TBT: Bedknobs and Broomsticks is Fantastically Strange

The holidays were a slightly slow time at the office, so naturally our solution was to watch Disney movies we hadn’t seen in a long time. Or ever. Enter Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Here’s the elevator pitch: Three kids are orphaned and wind up in a small village during a war. They end up living with this woman who turns out to be an apprentice witch (gasp!), except she’s maybe not great at being a witch. She does manage to successfully turn an ordinary bedknob into a magical bedknob that makes their bed fly them off to many places. The best place, though, is an animated island called Naboombu where the gang searches for a powerful spell they can use to save ALL of England (which is a lot of people to save).

For those who are unfamiliar with this classic, we can only describe it as fantastically strange. Don’t just take our word for it. See for yourself…

There’s Angela Lansbury as Miss Price (dancing with a broom):

The guy from Mary Poppins is in this movie too, which is excellent. But he’s a bit of a scam artist in this film. He pretends to be a magician, but that turns out not to be true. Sigh. At least his fake magic looks real cool:

And then there are the three siblings who end up living with Miss Price. We bet they had no idea they were getting into this when they first sat down to dinner:

Then there’s the time when Miss Price’s magic goes awry and pieces of clothing start dancing and running amok independent of the people wearing them:

And a whole musical sequence where the adventurers take the magic flying bed underwater to interact with fish and other sea creatures:

Before we continue, we’ll let you watch the scene:

There’s a soccer game that makes absolutely no sense featuring a rhino who spears the ball, an elephant who’s impossibly tall, a gorilla wearing a funny hat, an ostrich who curiously doesn’t have its head in the ground, and others. And by others we mean that guy from Mary Poppins again:
Emelius and the soccer team

There are also some antics that involve watching the big game, stealing that piece of magic from a soccer-obsessed, childlike lion, and then trying to escape without being caught:
Miss Price and the kids
David Tomlinson and a lion
BEdknobs and Broomsticks whole group

We don’t want to spoil anything else, since we think you should watch the movie. We’ll just leave you with this:
Emelius being thrown by a bear

We rest our case.

Now that we’ve convinced you of Bedknobs and Broomsticks’ fantastic strangeness, we’ll leave you to watch this trailer and prepare for your own viewing:
