Hands up if you’ve got big #goals! OK, we’re assuming there are a lot of raised hands here. Which is why we’ve put together this handy step-by-step guide to achieving your career goals. Our inspiration? Disney characters! We’ve watched our favorites pursue big dreams, work extra hard, defy major obstacles, and ultimately come out on top. So the next time anyone questions how many Disney movies you’re watching on the regular, simply explain to them that you’re conducting research. The kind of research that’s going to help you reach your goals like a total boss.
1. Figure out what you want.
You might be super clear about what your goals are. Or you may need to do a little digging. If you’re having trouble figuring out what you want, do something. Anything. Remember how many things Rapunzel did in her tower before she finally got out? Process of elimination can be a powerful tool.
2. Take a bold step in the direction of your goals.
It doesn’t get much bolder than dressing up like a fictitious prince and flying right up to the Sultan of Agrabah to ask for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Even if he wasn’t born a prince, Aladdin is the king of faking it ‘til you make it. And you can be too, whether or not you own a magic carpet.
3. Know that everyone starts somewhere.
Sure, Judy Hopps didn’t aspire to be a meter maid. But does she turn up her nose at her first assignment on the job? No way! She doles out those parking tickets like an Olympian. Future Police Chief right there!
4. Be prepared to work hard.
Did Mulan want to climb that incredibly tall pole and fight a bunch of guys twice her size? Truth be told, not really. But did she know that it would get her where she wanted to be? Most definitely. Hang in there through the bruises and you’ll get there, too.
5. Be willing to go down the rabbit hole.
When you’re following your dreams, chances are things are going to get weird. In fact, we can pretty much guarantee a healthy dose of “How did I get here?” moments. When you find yourself in strange and unknown territory, just remember Alice. She rolled with it like nobody’s business and ended up with one incredible dream.
6. Don’t be afraid to let go of who you thought you were.
Along with those “How did I get here?” moments, you’ll more than likely have a few “Who am I?” moments. Maybe you used to be a quiet wallflower and now you’re voicing your opinions left and right. Maybe you used to sleep in until noon and now you’re up before sunrise. Don’t panic. A new you is emerging in the pursuit of your goals, and she’s awesome.
7. Understand that setbacks are part of the journey.
Often, what seems like a setback is actually something that’s propelling you toward your dreams even faster than you can imagine. When Belle agreed to stay in Beast’s castle, she couldn’t have known that she was going to both fall in love and gain access to the best library anyone has ever seen. But she hung in there, and you can too.
8. Gather a team to help you.
As much as we’d like to think otherwise, each of us is only one person. Asking for help is hard, but it pays off. And Carl taught us that even if your team only consists of one other person and a dog, you can conquer the impossible together.
9. It helps to find a wise teacher.
A mentor is someone who’s been through the struggle and gained a ton of wise wisdom to impart to you. Even if advice like “Can’t cut it out, it will grow right back” seems confusing at first, eventually the meaning will become clear and you’ll be grateful for the insight.
10. A trusty sidekick is also quite helpful.
Whether they’re telling jokes to lift your spirits or reminding you of your moral code, sidekicks are the unsung heroes of achieving your goals. Just make sure that you treat your sidekick to a really great meal and/or spa day when you reach the finish line.
11. Keep swimming.
You may often feel like you’re in the deep end with no clear way of getting out. Or that you’re fighting against the current. Or stuck in one place, treading water. So many ocean metaphors are applicable here. Just keep swimming and riding those waves. You’re going to get there.
12. Keep your eyes on the prize.
Would Merida have hit bullseye if she hadn’t actually looked at the bullseye? Maybe. But we can all agree that looking at it helped a lot. Distractions come in all forms: things, people, opinions, and doubts. But if you keep your eye on what you want, you’ll hit your target.
Your hard work has paid off, and you’ve reached your goal! Before you start chasing the next one, take a little time to celebrate what you’ve accomplished. After all, there’s nothing better than sharing your dreams with your loved ones. Pride, joy, and warm hugs all around!
