Gerald is quite possibly the greatest sea lion of our time. Even with his newfound fame in Finding Dory (which is back in theaters this Labor Day weekend), Gerald remains relatable to us. He’s just a friendly sea lion trying to live his life in the most authentic way possible. Gerald also just wants to have fun. He doesn’t want to be an average sea lion. He wants to be Gerald. Gerald doesn’t follow the rules. He makes the rules. And, in a way, aren’t we all trying to do the same? Here’s some reasons why Gerald really is all of us:

And who doesn’t? We all need sunlight in our lives, and Gerald knows this. He also knows that the best place to catch some sun is on a rock with his friends. Gerald wants up on that rock. He has his eye on the prize and is focused and committed to this goal. We can all relate to having that one thing we want most in the world. And we are also just like Gerald because …
3. Gerald doesn’t give up on his goals.
No hurdle will delay him. No words can stop him. He is not afraid to be challenged. He is not afraid to try again. He never loses his poise. He remains cool and collected. It’s just like when you’re preparing for that important exam or presentation. Focus and commitment are the only things that get you through. You don’t give up because you care, and so does Gerald. 4. Gerald takes care of his prized possessions.
Like his green bucket. To the outside eye it might seem like just a bucket but, nay, it is everything. You can scoop water with this bucket, and even transport certain adorable fish to safety in it. Gerald knows its value because he is wise. We can all relate to that one possession we treasure that no one else seems to understand.
5. Gerald takes careful measure to achieve his goals.
We all have to make calculated plans to follow our dreams. It takes courage and commitment, and sometimes bargaining. Gerald knows he has to trade his prized bucket in order to sit on the rock, so he does. And he never looks back because …
6. Gerald achieves his goals.
Gerald gets to sit on that rock. Maybe not for long, but he does it. And he is proud. Next time you get the job you wanted, ace that test, or finish a big project, think of Gerald sitting on a rock, glimmering in the sun.
