This week we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of one of the most iconic Disney sports films of all time, The Mighty Ducks. It’s hard to believe that 25 years have gone by since we first met Gordon Bombay, and the underdog team that ruled the ice. No other film shaped my childhood more, and not a day goes by when I don’t remind myself that “Ducks fly together.” I have also been known to randomly start chanting, “Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!” at literally anyone who needs to hear it. Here’s some of the best moments from the film that started it all:
When Gordon Bombay first meets the District 5 Pee Wee Hockey Team.
What a journey we’re all about to go on when this moment happens. Averman warns Gordon that the team is not great. Gordan says he’ll be the judge of that. The team takes the ice. Gordon learns that they are indeed not great. Classic. Even when they are falling all over the ice, unable to control the puck, and 0-9 in the league, Ducks fly together.
When the whole team gets into Gordon’s limo.
Iconic. Even when Gordan is not having it, Ducks fly together.
When they lose their first game to the Hawks.
Gordon is not having this moment either, especially when his old coach for the Hawks is so rude about it. But, the team gives Gordon a wake up call—pointing out that he isn’t doing a great job coaching them. Thus, reminding Gordon, before he even knows it, that Ducks fly together.
When Hans speaks truth to Gordon.
Hans is probably the wisest person in the history of Disney sports. He knows that Gordon and the team have it in them to be champions. It’s him who convinces Gordon to turn it around. Hans knows that Ducks fly together.
When Gordon gets back on the ice.
He’s facing his fears. It’s a turning point for Coach Bombay. Because, DUCKS FLY TOGETHER.
When Gordon trains the team with eggs instead of pucks.
He also gets them new equipment (thank you very much Mr. Ducksworth) and ties Goldberg the goalie to the goal. What is the team learning in this moment? THAT DUCKS FLY TOGETHER.
When the team gets the Ducks jerseys.
This Coach Bombay quote is everything: “Ever seen a duck fight? No way. Why? Because the other animals are afraid. They know that if they mess with one duck, they’ve got to deal with the whole flock. I’m proud to be a duck and I’d be proud to fly with any one of you. So how ’bout it? Whose a duck?” Fulton will be a Duck. Charlie will be a Duck. Everyone will be a Duck. I WILL BE A DUCK. BECAUSE, DUCKS FLY TOGETHER.
When the “quack, quack, quack, quack” chant is born.
What a time to be alive. This is one of my favorite moments in The Mighty Ducks history. When they chant at their first game as Ducks, and when they chant in school, it never gets old. Ducks fly together.
When Gordon quacks at Mr. Ducksworth.
In his exact and iconic words: “Yes sir, Mr. Ducksworth. Thank you very much, Mr. Ducksworth. Quack, quack, quack, quack, Mr. Ducksworth.” Gordon Bombay is the best and knows that Ducks fly together.
When Gordon goes finds the team in detention at school.
The team is writing on the chalkboard: “I will not quack at the principal.” They were quacking because Ducks fly (and quack) together.
When the Ducks make the playoffs.
Thanks to Fulton’s goal that literally broke the net. Ducks fly together.
When Coach Bombay sends Charlie out for the winning goal.
Charlie perfects the “Triple-D” move. Ducks fly together.
When the Ducks win at life … and the championship.
I always wanted to run out on the ice with them and hug literally everyone on the team when they won. And when Hans tells Gordon he’s proud of him I cry every time. BECAUSE DUCKS FLY TOGETHER.
Thank you to the entire cast and crew of The Mighty Ducks for flying together. Happy 25th anniversary!
