When we were kids, we would race home in the afternoons, grab a juice box and some string cheese (because snacks rock), and watch The Disney Afternoon. This wonderful block of programming on the Disney Channel was home to some of the greatest cartoons ever. While many 22 minute animated shows have come to pass since then, these ones will always hold a special place in our heart… especially because of their incredible theme songs. You might have forgotten some of the words, (we didn’t, but that’s because we’re really nerdy), but we promise these gems will get stuck in your head all over again. Here is the ranking of our personal favorites:
This one has plenty of zip and lots of zany. It’s a little fast paced, which makes us wonder if we ever knew any of the words except that low toned “Bonkers!” Also, there’s a cameo by the Mad Hatter, which we love.
We love the sense of adventure (and a bit of danger) right off the bat. Thankfully, Baloo is at the helm of the Sea Duck, so we feel better about the situation. Then we start singing, “Oh-we-oh Talespin! Oh-we-oh Talespin!” and all seems right in the world.
If we’re being honest, this particular theme song scared this writer as a child. It received a higher ranking for its intensity factor that we can now appreciate as adults. There is dramatic music, swooping gargoyles, and intense weather scenes. If you ask us, it’s all kinds of epic.
4. Darkwing Duck
“Let’s get dangerous!” Darkwing Duck taught us many things as kids. The least of which is that when there’s trouble, you call D.W. We like this theme song because it has lots of intrigue, but also shows off the hijinks that Darkwing Duck, Launchpad McDuck, and Gosalyn Mallard all get into. Also, that part with the rain jackets and umbrellas is classic.
3. Goof Troop
All we can say is “remix!” There’s lots of Goofy goofiness and Max in his super cool shades. For some reason, we have a feeling this song would be great a cappella, which makes us love it even more. Plus, we get a sampling of Max’s great dance moves, which make an appearance in A Goofy Movie. Now we kind of want to listen to “Stand Out,” too.
2. Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers
This theme song has it all: action, hijinks, and cheese. We also love how you get a good sense of what each character is like. From the brainy Gadget to the goofy Dale, there’s a character for everyone to relate to. Plus, Zipper just does all kinds of impressive things (talk about an underrated character.) Just remember, “There’s no case too big, no case too small, when you need help just call, C-c-chhhhiiip and Dale Rescue Rangers!”
This song is just magical. There’s no way to deny it. There’s the giant vault of money that Scrooge McDuck goes swimming in, Huey, Dewey, and Louie shaking their duck tails, and Webby kissing a shark. There’s pie-throwing, d-d-d-danger, mummies, AND aliens. Seriously, this theme song has it all. Nothing can top this one, especially since a couple of us got to live it in real life.
And now guess what’s stuck in your head? “DuckTales, oo-woo-oo!”
There you have it, our very arbitrary but important ranking of Disney Afternoon theme songs. Which one is your favorite?
