Disney was a huge part of my childhood. Growing up in the greater Los Angeles area, I frequented Disneyland and went to see every new movie opening weekend. For both my older sister and myself, Disney was (and still is) very much a part of our life and how we were raised. Of course, as with any generation of Disney fan, the music of Disney is a constant reminder of the on-screen magic that you can take with you everywhere. And in the ‘90s, the best way to listen to classic Disney music was with the Disney’s Sing Along Songs videos.
From 1986 to 2006, Disney’s Sing Along videos were a fixture in VHS and DVD players everywhere. They showcased clips of your favorite Disney moments and taught you the lyrics to your favorite songs. All you had to do was follow the bouncing ball! To honor these staples in Disney history, we here at Oh My Disney have decided to rank the top five Disney’s Sing Along Songs videos of all time. See if you remember these gems:
1. Disneyland Fun
My personal favorite sing-a-long video by far! Disneyland Fun gave us classic songs to listen and sing along to (such as “Grim Grinning Ghosts”, “Step In Time”, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah”, and “It’s A Small World” to name a few). With the classic intro by Professor Owl, this video also serves as an amazing time capsule—forever giving us a nostalgic look back at what Disneyland looked like in 1990.
2. Very Merry Christmas Songs
1988’s Very Merry Christmas Songs features all your favorite traditional Christmas songs, but set to scenes from Disney movies and shorts. With an opening from Jiminy Cricket and a glimpse at Disneyland’s Holiday Parade, this is a video that is worth adding to your holiday rotation.
3. Fun With Music
This edition of Sing Along Songs is a gem, filled with lesser known songs that deserve their time in the limelight. Oliver & Company and The Aristocats are both featured, along with classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and 101 Dalmatians.
4. Under The Sea
This video is on the shorter end, but it packs a punch. “Under The Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” are the obvious highlights from this The Little Mermaid-themed volume, but “A Whale of a Tale” (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) helps add to the overall tone. And once again, underrepresented films like The Sword In The Stone and The Rescuers make appearances as well.
5. You Can Fly!
This volume of the sing-along series is probably the most well rounded and filled with undeniable classics. Peter Pan, The Jungle Book, Pinocchio, Mary Poppins, Dumbo, Lady and the Tramp all make up the bulk of the video. But by adding in songs from Winnie The Pooh, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (!!!), there is truly a song for every generation!
