The year: 2006. A simpler time. A carefree time. A time of High School Musical.
We met Gabriella. All she wanted to do was read. We related to this.
We met Troy. All he wanted to do was play basketball. We had a harder time relating to this, but he’s Zac Efron, so we were obviously on board.
AND THEN THEY MET. AND SANG A DUET. AND IT WAS MAGICAL. AND OUR LIVES WERE CHANGED FOREVER.
But, alas, winter break ski resort vacations can only last so long. Sigh. And East High School had all sorts of social rules like jocks only hanging out with jocks, and the seemingly mandatory shouting of “Wildcats!” in the hallway throughout the day.
Side note – We never noticed that Troy’s dad/East High’s basketball coach is kind of dreamy.
Anyways. Unbeknownst to both Troy and Gabriella, Gabriella transfers to East High! Troy’s school! They go on to literally finish each other’s sentences. It’s cute.
Then we meet Sharpay. She’s pretty much a hurricane of fabulousness. And she knows it.
And then some other things happen. Troy tries to get his head in the game and focus on the basketball, Gabriella joins the smart people club, there are some musical numbers. And there is an appropriate amount of angst. Troy and Gabriella secretly audition for, and become the leads of, the school musical. And the plot thickens.
Also, this outfit coordination happens:
And Ryan says best line of the movie: “It’s a crowd favorite. Everybody loves a good jazz square.”
So true.
Okay, then comes the central dilemma of the film: Will Troy and Gabriella shatter the stereotypes of their respective social circles so they can be together and star in the musical? More importantly, will that one dude ever get to bake the perfect creme brulee?
Of course they will. (And spoiler alert: he does.) This is High. School. Musical.
And if there’s one thing we learned from the wonder of HSM, it’s that we’re all in this together. Jocks, smarties, musical folks, cooking enthusiasts, skaters, other people. Everyone. And maybe we’re not as different as we might seem.
And that’s why we love this movie so much. It gives us the feels. In the heart. What’s your favorite moment from High School Musical? Tell us in the comments!
