*Spoiler alert* If you haven’t seen Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels, we suggest departing this article immediately and having a “Rebels” marathon!
After the season finale of Star Wars Rebels in March, we’ve been waiting with major anticipation to find out what will happen to the crew of the Ghost. Is Ahsoka alive? Will Ezra be tempted by the Dark Side? With so many unanswered questions, the panel for Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels was one not to be missed. On stage, creator, Executive Producer and Supervising Director, Dave Filoni, Tiya Sircar (Sabine), and Sam Witwer (Darth Maul) gave fans a sneak peak as to what we can look forward to when the show returns. Here’s exactly what you need to know about Star Wars Rebels Season 3:
Did Ahsoka survive?
Well, we don’t have an exact answer on that, but according to Filoni, Ahsoka is definitely not finished on Star Wars Rebels. “Well, Yoda says a lot of things to Anakin: ‘Death is a natural part of life,’ ‘Miss people, do not. Mourn them, do not.’ The conflict with Vader and Ahsoka was something we’ve prepared for almost a decade,” explained Filoni. How we’ll see her is yet to be determined, but we’re just glad that Ahsoka will not be gone from the series. “I’m not going to say in what way, but it’s likely that you might have not seen the last of Ahsoka Tano,” said Filoni, which caused the crowd to erupt in cheers.
The Ghost crew has some brand new looks.
When panel moderator Warwick Davis asked Filoni about what the characters will look like in Season 3, Filoni revealed new images of Kanan’s outfit and eye mask and fans couldn’t help but “ooh.” Filoni said that the team looked at samurai for inspiration for Kanan’s new look. The mask, which Filoni shared, was difficult to design and has a nod to Captain Rex, symbolizing Kanan’s troubled past with Rex and now being able to see through his eyes.
On the style front, Ezra has a new hair cut, and Sabine has new ombre hair, which we have to admit might be our favorite Star Wars hairstyle to date. Sircar, who voices Sabine, said she asked for the ombre hair for Season 2, and is now super excited to have her suggestion reflected in Season 3.
As for Hera and Zeb, Filoni mentioned that they tweaked those two characters’ outfits to begin to fuse the looks with what you’ll see in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (which takes place around the same time as Star Wars Rebels) and what comes later in Star Wars: A New Hope.
We’re going to be learning a lot more about Sabine.
Sircar was eager to tell fans that they can expect to see a lot more from Sabine this season, which we’re totally stoked to see. “I get to interact with a lot more Mandalorians. I may or may not be related to some of them.” Over the course of Season 3, Sircar told fans that we’ll learn about Sabine’s past and that she will have to face that past “in a very real way.”
And if fans weren’t excited enough for more Mandalorians, they went especially wild for some of Sabine’s new gadgets. We got to see a clip of one of those tools in action as Sabine used a jetpack to help her and Ezra escape a pack of Madalorians who were working for the Empire. Oh, and did we forget to mention we saw an image with Sabine holding a Dark Saber? We. Must. Know. More.
Darth Maul will continue to be a force in Star Wars Rebels.
Fans couldn’t believe it when Darth Maul reappeared last season, and according to Filoni, and Witwer, who voices Maul, everyone’s favorite double-wielding Sith is going to continue to impact the story in Rebels. “Maul is now coming to grips with kind of what his life is about, what it’s been, what he thinks it needs to be, and he’s searching for a purpose,” said Filoni. “He’s searching for some kind of existence, because he’s kind of failed again, and again, and again.”
In the finale of Season 2, we got to see Darth Maul and Ezra’s relationship begin to form and in Season 3, Maul will continue to try and convince Ezra that the Dark Side is the path he should choose. “He thinks of Ezra as his apprentice, as a kid who has a lot of potential, but it’s just a little bit misguided. And if he could just nudge Ezra a little bit toward a different path, that Ezra could achieve everything that Maul has been trying to achieve,” explained Witwer.
Grand Admiral Thrawn is in Season 3!
There’s nothing like sitting in a room when a piece of Star Wars news that only the biggest Star Wars fans will appreciate is revealed. After the premiere of the Season 3 trailer, the crowd went absolutely crazy for the news that Grand Admiral Thrawn, a beloved character from a Star Wars trilogy of books by Timothy Zahn will be joining “Star Wars Rebels” as its newest bad guy. Zahn pre-recorded a message to fans, saying what an honor it was to work with Filoni to bring Thrawn to Rebels. The good news just kept coming, as Zahn also announced a new novel, Thrawn, will be coming out in April 2017 and that the character will be voiced by Lars Mikkelsen.
Tom Baker voices a new character named Bendu.
Tom Baker, who is well-known for his role as the fourth doctor in Doctor Who is joining Star Wars Rebels as Bendu. While we don’t know much about his character yet, Filoni explained that his allegiance is not to the dark or light side, but to something else. As Yoda might say, intrigued, we are.
