See the Breathtaking New Trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Yesterday, the amazing new poster for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was revealed, and today, a brand new trailer premiered on Good Morning America. And it was amazing. We already know that this story will take place between Episode III and Episode IV of Star Wars, and that it will follow the story of the group of rebels who were tasked with stealing the plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the Death Star, as first mentioned in the opening scroll of Episode IV. In the last trailer, we got a look at many of the characters, new and familiar (Darth Vader!), as well as new settings like the paradise-like planet Scarif. Now, through the new trailer, we gained further insight into the past of Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, and a closer look at all of the amazing characters that will be joining in her journey. Take a look:

The trailer begins with our first look at Galen Erso (played by Mads Mikkelsen), Jyn Erso’s father, who says to a young Jyn, “Jyn, whatever I do, I do it to protect you.” Then, in his white cape, Empire leader Director Orson Krennic (played by Ben Mendelsohn) shows up to face Jyn’s father, surrounded by Stormtroopers, dressed in all-black.

We see young Jyn hiding in the grass and watching, and then we are thrown forward in time to adult Jyn Erso’s world, where she is in a holding cell as a Stormtrooper in all-white walks by outside her door. We see a brief shot of TIE fighters flying in, outside of where Jyn is being held. There is an explosion inside the holding area and Rebel Alliance Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) appears and asks Jyn, “Do you want to get out of here?”

As Jyn flies away in a ship, we then hear Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma’s voice (played by Genevieve O’Reilly) say, “Our rebellion is all that remains to push back the Empire. We think you might be able to help us.” We see Jyn is now in the headquarters for the Rebel Alliance with Mon Mothma and Captain Cassian Andor, who asks, “When was the last time you were in contact with your father?”

Mon Mothma reveals that Jyn’s father was “critical to the development of a super weapon” for the Empire. We see a view of a faint outline of the Death Star in the sky. Jyn vows that she is determined to find her father, if he had anything to do with building the weapon.

We now see an amazing look at the team who will help her do so. First, Baze Malbus (Wen Jiang) declares, “Alright, how many do I need?” When the Rebel team is assembled in a ship together, the droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) tells the team, “They are requesting a call sign.” Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) replies with, “Rogue. Rogue one.” And now we know what Rogue One means!

We then get a look into the world of the Empire when Director Orson Krennic says to Darth Vader, “The power we are dealing with here is immeasurable.” This gives us chills!

Back at the Rebel Alliance headquarters, when asked, “If the Empire has this kind of power, what chance do we have?” Jyn Erso replies, “We have hope. Rebellions are built on hope.” We then see images of some thrilling battle scenes on the ground, and Saw Gerrara (Forest Whitaker) walking towards Jyn. More chills!

We are next taken into the world of the new planet Scarif as Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) epically declares, “Take hold of this moment. The Force is strong.” Then Captain Cassian Andor equally epically says, “Make ten men feel like one hundred.”

We are then launched into some amazing battle scenes showing the Rebels taking on the Empire, complete with Stormtroopers, X-Wing Fighters, and epic scenery as Jyn declares, “We’ll take the next chance, and the next. You’re all rebels aren’t you?”

The trailer ends with Saw Gerrara imploring, “Save the rebellion. Save the dream,” as Chirrut Imwe and Baze Malbus run for their lives with explosions behind them.

This trailer was packed full of amazing images and breathtaking moments, and has us absolutely on the edge of our seats until we can see the full story come to life. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
