Like most Beauty and the Beast fans, the songs from the animated classic were pretty much the soundtrack of our childhood. With the live-action reimagining set to debut on March 17, we’ve been thinking a lot about what we hope to see in the movie, especially when it comes to the music. While it’s been announced that we’ll be getting new songs from the musical minds of Alan Menken and Tim Rice, we now know that Cogsworth won’t be getting his own number — despite Sir Ian McKellen’s (who will voice the clock) admirable attempt to make it happen.
According to a recent feature from Entertainment Weekly, McKellen was determined to make it happen. His partner Lumiere got one in the animated film (“Be Our Guest”) so why shouldn’t he? Despite it not working, his attempt was incredibly charming.
“I kept singing what I thought would be a rather good addition to the score,” McKellen remarked to Entertainment Weekly. “‘My name is Cogsworth!/ And I’m a clock!/Ticktock!’ But I didn’t get my own song.””
Of course, we don’t know if the actor actually went around set belting the song, but it is pretty amusing to think about. We suppose sometimes things just aren’t meant to be. As Cogsworth himself always says: “If it’s not Baroque, don’t fix it.”
Beauty and the Beast waltzes into theaters on March 17.
