We’re Live Blogging the Pandora – The World of Avatar Panel at D23’s Destination D

Here at D23’s Destination D: Amazing Adventures, the visionary writer/director/producer James Cameron is joining producer Jon Landau and Imagineer Joe Rohde on stage to discuss the highly anticipated land, Pandora – The World of Avatar.  Yesterday, we learned from Bob Chapek that the exotic extension of Disney’s Animal Kingdom will open in summer 2017, and you can already book your tickets to be among the first to explore it. Now, it’s time to take a deep dive into what the immersive world has in store for Walt Disney World Resort guests.

Update: Pandora – The World of Avatar’s panel concluded with an early look at the reclusive Shaman of Songs from the Na’vi River Journey attraction. See the first glimpse of a phenomenally realistic Pandora local below.

And here’s the full liveblog from today’s excursion through this amazing new world.

Good morning from Orlando! We couldn’t be more excited to learn more about Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Tommy November 20, 20167:44 am

Hundreds of D23 members have filed into Disney’s Contemporary Resort for the sold-out event Destination D: Amazing Adventures.

Tommy November 20, 20167:50 am

Our host is Dr. Albert Falls, who savvy Disney fans will recognize as the intrepid explorer from the Jungle Cruise.

Tommy November 20, 20167:56 am

We’re just minutes away from James Cameron, Jon Landau, and Joe Rohde taking the stage.

“There’s nothing more fantastic for an explorer than finding a whole new world.” – Dr. Albert Falls introducing the Pandora panel

We’re greeted with a video from Alpha Centauri Expeditions, the fictional eco-tourism group that will bring family and explorers to Pandora.

Tommy November 20, 20168:02 am

The head of Alpha Centauri Expeditions (ACE) introduces visionary Walt Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde, who he says has just returned from Pandora!

Tommy November 20, 20168:03 am

James Cameron takes the stage now to huge applause from the audience.

Tommy November 20, 20168:05 am

Cameron announces that the Na’vi people will be there to teach explorers and visitors about their culture, connecting them to nature.

Tommy November 20, 20168:06 am

This world of Pandora takes place a hundred years after the chaos and devastation that happened in a certain “documentary” film some may have seen.

Tommy November 20, 20168:08 am

Cameron and Landau are showing us images of floating mountains connected by vines, Na’vi totems, and bioluminescent lifeforms. Every element is absolutely gorgeous.

Tommy November 20, 20168:08 am

Visitors can explore a mountain biome, with a rainforest around the foot of the mountain.

Tommy November 20, 20168:10 am

Why can the mountains float? Magnetic fields caused by the planet’s substance “unobtanium” help lift them. Cameron says, “It’s physics.”

Tommy November 20, 20168:11 am

There will be a mix of human structures and crashed ships from the war period amid the natural world of Pandora.

Tommy November 20, 20168:13 am

According to Cameron, Banshee is a fascinating animal evolved from a flying fish, and the Na’vi can bond with them to hunt and travel.

Tommy November 20, 20168:14 am

The upcoming signature attraction The Flight of Passage will combine the Avatar program and the Banshees.

Tommy November 20, 20168:15 am

Flight of Passage is a flying rite of passage, guided by a Na’vi “so you don’t get eaten.” The attraction will provide a majestic, magical flight through Pandora.

Tommy November 20, 20168:16 am

Flight of Passage will go through waterfalls and pass over sea wildlife. We’re ready for a test flight.

Tommy November 20, 20168:18 am

On your expedition, you can see in-progress experiments from the scientists who are working to conserve the land.

Tommy November 20, 20168:19 am

Jon is taking us through all of the life on Pandora, from apex predators to plant eaters.

Tommy November 20, 20168:20 am

Na’vi don’t use metals and prefer to handcraft and weave in harmony with nature. You’ll see wall hangings that tell a history of their culture.

Tommy November 20, 20168:22 am

The nomadic Na’vi clan, who humans call the Windtraders, bring guests handmade items and unique gifts. (And the clan also loves gossip, according to Cameron.)

Tommy November 20, 20168:24 am

In case you were worried that there wouldn’t be any toys, we’re looking at a very cute plush styled after a creature native to Pandora.

Tommy November 20, 20168:24 am

Though the Na’vi tend to eat food that’s 3 feet long, visitors who go to the Satu’li Canteen can eat meals that are adapted from their cuisine.

Tommy November 20, 20168:25 am

Pandoran bioluminescence appears after sunset, when the land will start to light up from the mountains to the forest.

Tommy November 20, 20168:26 am

The bioluminescent plants and animals will react with the outside world, meaning you can interact with these organisms for a spectacularly immersive experience.

Tommy November 20, 20168:28 am

The Shaman of Songs, an amazing, musical Na’vi, will sing a song that causes the forest to react to her with stunning lights and sounds.

Tommy November 20, 20168:29 am

There is a consciousness in the forest known as “Eywa,” which is kind of a “biological internet.”

Tommy November 20, 20168:30 am

The overall message is that we can live in such a way that Earth can be like a Pandora for us.

Tommy November 20, 20168:30 am

We’re watching the first video of the Shaman of Songs.

Tommy November 20, 20168:33 am

The Shaman of Songs will be a pivotal guide on the other signature attraction, Na’vi River Journey. Based on the video preview, the level of realism is absolutely extraordinary.

Tommy November 20, 20168:36 am

That’s a wrap from the Pandora panel, which means it’s time to plan our expedition!

Tommy November 20, 20168:42 am
