For the past few months at Disney California Adventure in Disneyland Resort, a new attraction has quickly risen up, coloring a corner of Disneyland’s adjacent park with glitz, glam, and a hint of intergalactic grunge. That attraction? Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Or Mission: BREAK-IN if you’ve been one of the many guests clamoring to join the ragtag team of Guardians of the Galaxy on their next adventure.
Well, fear not—the wait is over! And to help alleviate those days of anticipation, we have updated intel on the mission, now launched as part of the Summer of Heroes at Disney California Adventure. Cue the music!
1. A mixtape of ‘60s, ‘70s, and early ‘80s songs provide the soundtrack for the attraction.
No, really—cue the music! Just as nostalgic pop hits are integral to the Guardians of the Galaxy bubbly brand of mayhem, so too are they vital to the attraction. And now we finally have the 6-song tracklist powering guests’ trip through the cosmos. Drum roll, please…
- “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar (1980)
- “Give Up The Funk” by Parliament (1975)
- “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf (1968)
- “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 (1969)
- “Free Ride” by The Edgar Winter Group (1973)
- “Burning Love” by Elvis Presley (1972)
Show. Stopping. We’ve already created a new playlist on our phones to prepare.
2. No single experience will feel the same.
And with six different songs come six different ride profiles – or “vignettes,” as the Walt Disney Imagineers refer to them. No spoilers here (what fun is that?), however, we can say that each time guests board a gantry lift to rescue the Guardians, they will experience one of these randomized scenarios. So extra(terrestrial).
3. The score might sound familiar, and it should.
Now, here’s a real treat. Tyler Bates—who scored both Guardians of the Galaxy films—has penned original new music to be featured throughout the attraction. From the Collector’s interior gallery to the maintenance bay, his underscore will evoke the fizzy funk from the movie franchise while also providing a “new way to immerse fans in the musical world,” says creative director of Walt Disney Imagineering, Danny Handke.
4. The actual Guardians of the Galaxy cast has gone on the attraction…and they loved it!
That’s right. The Guardians: Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), and Dave Bautista (Drax) all had a hand in bringing the colorful world to life. And how was it working with them? Take it from Walt Disney Imagineering creative producer, Estefania Harbuck:
“They’ve been a huge, huge help with bringing this attraction to life. We were able to get them on and even got feedback from them; I mean we actually made changes [based on those notes] that have made the attraction better, more authentic; I think, just generally more awesome.”
If Chris Pratt signed off on the attraction, that’s good enough for us!
5. The actual filmmakers behind Guardians of the Galaxy have ridden the attraction…and they also loved it!
“I think that was one of the funnest things for us: having the ability to partner with James [Gunn], Tyler Bates, Joe Quesada, and Kevin Feige – it’s been our little brain trust to bring this together. James was heavily involved in the tone and dialogue…You know, making sure that when writing Rocket, he’s not saying, ‘Aw shucks!’ since that’s not something the character would say.”
6. And so have Disneyland Resort cast members!
“Our Cast did have some input on what would work. They looked at it through the eyes of a guest, and what would they feel and what would they see.”
7. The Disney California Adventure Cast Members wear costumes inspired by the Collector’s signature style.
Speaking of Cast Members, we previously told you that they will be “in” on the story as employees at the Collector’s Fortress, and this time, we got a first look at their galactic garb. Think regal and ornate, with a magenta “color palette very in-tune with the Collector” – but not enough to overshadow him, of course. They even sport the Tevan logo on their sleeves.
According to Creative Director of Themed Entertainment, Brian Crosby, “This is a brand new creation and [the costumes] feel like they’re part of this world.”
8. The attraction features moments and characters from Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2… and beyond!
“There are a couple of characters from Volume 2 that do appear in Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!, as well several exciting references. There’s one particularly fun Easter egg that, if you go see the film on May 5 and then come back here on May 27—if you pay very close attention—there’s a scene in the woods that will definitely pay off here.”
Got that, everyone? Go see the movie, and keep your eye on the pine.
9. This attraction is unlike anything you’ve experienced before.
Of course, the stars’ and casts’ opinions matter, but just what do the Walt Disney Imagineers think of their creation? Take it from Dave Bushore, who oversees Franchise Creative & Marketing at Marvel:
“This is by far one of the funnest and funniest rides I’ve ridden in this park. The thrills, the humor, the music—you get off and want to get right back on. And then again. It’s truly an immersive experience that will launch you into space, take your breath away, and keep you feeling that way the rest of the day.”
We’re holding our breath! Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is open now at Disney California Adventure.
