3 Lion King References That Went Over Our Heads As Kids

We know it’s hard to believe sometimes, but we weren’t always child geniuses. References to adult movies and literature were just not our thing as kids, and Disney movies are full of them, including The Lion King! Aside from the previously discussed reference to the movie Taxi Driver, here are a few more references and plays on words we missed while watching The Lion King for the first time.

  1. “You’ll never go hungry again!”

An iconic scene in Gone With the Wind is when Scarlett O’Hara returns to Tara and declares “I’ll never be hungry again!” Scar makes a similar promise to the hyenas during “Be Prepared,” and the camera zooms out just like it did in Gone With the Wind.

  2. It’s a reference to Hamlet!

In particular, the relationship between Scar, Mufasa, and Simba has brought about comparisons to Shakespeare’s Hamlet. We hadn’t read Hamlet yet when we first saw The Lion King, but don’t worry, we’ve now read it 10,000 times, almost as many times as we have seen The Lion King. 👀

  3. When Scar says: “I’m afraid I’m at the shallow end of the gene pool.”

Shallow end … gene pool? Okay, Scar, you may be evil, but you’ve got jokes.
