Production Has Begun on the Live-Action Reimagining of Dumbo Directed by Tim Burton!

The news at D23 Expo 2017 is the gift that keeps on giving, and today we were all ears to hear that production has officially begun on the Tim Burton directed live-action reimagining of the 1941 classic, Dumbo. Yes. To. This! With the magic of Disney, the emotional heart of Dumbo’s story, and the iconic style of Tim Burton’s films, this movie is sure to be stunning. Today we learned more about the production and its cast and crew! Here’s what we know so far:

The Cast

The all-star cast includes Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell, Golden Globe winner Michael Keaton, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Danny DeVito, BAFTA Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Eva Green, and introduces Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins, who we’ll look forward to seeing on the big screen for the very first time! We’ll also see the amazing talents of Roshan Seth, DeObia Oparei, Sharon Rooney, and Douglas Reith.

The Story

The story follows Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), a former circus star and war veteran, who has been enlisted by circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) to care for a newborn elephant with oversized ears. The baby elephant’s ears are a laughingstock and embarrassment to the already struggling circus. That is, until Holt’s children (played by Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins) discover that Dumbo can fly! Aerial artist Colette Marchant (Eva Green) and entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) then swoop in to make Dumbo, the flying elephant, a star.

The Visual Effects

The lovable flying elephant, Dumbo, and many of his four-legged companions will be brought to life using state-of-the-art visual effects. And from what we know of past Tim Burton films like Alice in Wonderland, we imagine the visuals are going to be incredible!

The Creative Team

The creative team will include cinematographer Ben Davis (Guardians of the Galaxy), Academy Award-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), the 4-time Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland), editor Chris Lebenzon (Alice in Wonderland and Maleficent), and BAFTA Award-winning makeup artist Paul Gooch (Alice in Wonderland.) Ehren Kruger wrote the screenplay and will produce the film along with Katterli Frauenfelder, Derek Frey (Frankenweenie), and Justin Springer (TRON: Legacy). Nigel Gostelow is executive producer. What a fabulous crew! Here’s Tim Burton in an image that was just released:

The Release Date

March 29, 2019. We. Can’t. Wait.

Filming will take place entirely in England, and we can’t wait to see how the world of Dumbo is brought to life!

We are so excited, we’ll be flying to see Dumbo when it comes to theaters! (And we’ll probably be bringing our tissues, because if this reimagining is anything like the animated classic, there will be tears!) How excited are you? Keep checking back here for more updates live from D23 Expo!
