A legendary music icon performing a legendary song from one of our favorite Disney classics? There’s far too much to take in here.
Everything came full circle at The Lion King’s curtain call last night when the one and only Tony-nominated composer Elton John gave a surprise performance of his iconic hit “Circle of Life,” celebrating the musical’s 20 landmark years on Broadway.
We are as exhilarated as the audience—you have to see for yourself:
What a grand way to end the night! The cast and creative team members Julie Taymor, Tim Rice, Garth Fagan, Lebo M., Mark Mancina, Roger Allers, and Irene Mecchi—as well as hundreds of alumni—came together for the special moment.
The Lion King continues to claim its throne as one of the most popular stage musicals in the world, carrying on the legacy of the classic animated ‘90s film. Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions (under the direction of Thomas Schumacher), 24 global productions have been seen by more than 90 million people since its premiere on November 13, 1997—including us! We’re feeling a little nostalgic now—feel free to join us as we replay this video and passionately sing along to “Circle of Life.”
Music and lyrics for “Circle of Life” were written by Elton John and Tim Rice.
