It looks like new stories are coming to a galaxy far, far away. Today it was announced that the creators of the Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, are set to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films!
All we know so far is that these new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson—writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi—but we have a good feeling about this. And so does Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, according to her statement:
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story, and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
And we’re incredibly excited as well! See what the future Star Wars writer-producers Benioff and Weiss have to say about joining the Star Wars universe in this joint statement:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
There are no set release dates yet, but we’re thrilled for what lies ahead!
