Oh, boy! Mickey Mouse is turning 90 this year! The iconic mouse has been bringing smiles to our faces ever since his big-screen debut in Steamboat Willie on November 18, 1928, and over 100 cartoons later, he continues to do so to this day. This calls for a worldwide celebration! Here are all the details we learned from The Walt Disney Company blog:The festivities begin on March 7 at Disneyland with “The Happiest Show on Earth,” Opening Ceremony’s Spring 2018 runway fashion event showcasing a couture collection inspired by Mickey Mouse himself. You can bring these looks from the runway to your closet because after the show, select items will immediately be available for sale at shopDisney.com, Opening Ceremony.com, and Opening Ceremony stores—and the rest will hit stores in November. Our beloved Minnie Mouse, who shares this milestone anniversary and was recently honored with her official star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will also share the spotlight with Mickey at the fashion show. Tune-in to Disney YouTube on Wednesday, March 7 at 9pm PST to watch the Opening Ceremony fashion show live from Disneyland, and celebrate Mickey’s 90th and his “True Original” personality!
We’re just getting started! This show serves as the launch of “Mickey the True Original,” a global celebration of Mickey’s heritage, personality, and status as a pop-culture icon. You can look forward to many more fashion collaborations, engaging content, and events in the near future!
In addition, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club also has big plans for Mickey’s 90th this year. We’re already counting down the days until November for Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse, an event at Walt Disney World Resort featuring two fun-filled days of panels, presentations, and entertainment. And to commemorate the occasion, this year’s annual D23 Gold Member gift is an exclusive box set of 23 special Mickey Mouse mementos, including cool stuff like authentic reproductions of the Steamboat Willie script. Legendary Disney animator Mark Henn will paint Mickey’s official 90th birthday portrait, for the cover of the fall issue of D23’s quarterly publication, Disney twenty-three. With his work on Mickey’s Christmas Carol and more currently Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, we can’t wait to see the finished product!
Over in France, students from 38 design and art schools will be crafting their own works of Mickey inspired by their favorite artistic movement for the “Mickey Is Art” contest! Winners will have their masterpiece displayed this summer in 12 major train stations in France and for sale this September at Galerie Glénat in Paris.
But wait, there’s more Mickey in store for us throughout 2018! Tune into ABC to watch a star-studded celebration of Mickey’s birthday, featuring special guests and musical performances. Mickey will even get his own seven-minute extended-length birthday episode on Disney Channel later this year as part of season five of the Mickey Mouse animated short!
When it comes to celebrations, the Disney Parks are where it’s at. The World’s Biggest Mouse Party at Disney Parks worldwide begins late 2018 and goes into 2019! On Mickey’s big day (mark your calendars for November 18), Disney Parks and Resorts around the world will offer commemorative merch, photo locations, and more.
Disney On Ice will also salute the mouse as the “True Original” host of Disney On Ice by creating Mickey’s 90th pre-shows for productions touring the United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Special Celebration, a new production showcasing Mickey Mouse’s memories throughout the years, will launch in Japan in July 2018 and continue touring throughout the Asia-Pacific region until August 2019. We bet Mickey will be melting our hearts on the ice!
