From the moment we were introduced to the character of Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we knew we had met a strong woman we could root for. But it wasn’t until we spent some time with the actress behind Rose, Kelly Marie Tran, that we learned where much of Rose’s feistiness, intellect, and perseverance came from. It was, in essence, the start of a beautiful Stan-ship.
It’s clear that Kelly Marie Tran absolutely loves Star Wars as much as we do! We were even more than pleased to read a recent interview Tran did with GQ, where she talked about her life, including her Vietnamese parents, how she rarely gets recognized on the street, and of course the whole Star Wars thing. Yes, we’re already team Kelly Marie Tran, but here are 6 more reasons why we love her:
- She lives a “double life.”
Although she starred in one of the biggest movies of 2017, Tran says she rarely gets recognized. “You know, I look so different from Rose in real life,” she told GQ. “It does happen once in a while. I still go to Trader Joe’s or go work out … I get to live this awesome double life.”
- She said that John Boyega gives great advice.
“I really look up to John,” Tran said, subsequently making us giddy with excitement at their real-life friendship. According to Tran, Boyega gave her good advice about dealing with the notoriety that comes with starring in a Star Wars film. As Yoda would say, John Boyega, wise he is.
- She’s the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants.
Tran grew up in San Diego to Vietnamese refugees who “essentially gave up their lives” to provide for their children in America. “It was very much the immigrant mentality of sacrificing so their children could have choices,” she said of her upbringing.
- She admires many of the same women we admire.
When asked which women she looks up to, Tran gave a long list of inspiring ladies in the entertainment industry that included some of our faves like Tessa Thompson, Ava DuVernay, and Viola Davis. Paging Ava DuVernay, we’d like a movie starring these ladies, stat!
- She was a singer before she became an actor.
That’s right, Tran was a self-admitted “major choir nerd,” telling GQ, “I did regional choir, all-state California choir, and musical theater, and I was in a cappella groups at UCLA.” Um, Kelly Marie, we obviously need you to star in a musical now.
- She wants to help redefine beauty.
As if we couldn’t love her enough, Tran also talked about changing the definition and scope of what it means to be beautiful: “I hope I can be part of this redefining of what ‘beauty’ is. I think in ten or twenty years, people might look back on this as a time when a lot of women were really standing up for and defining themselves as opposed to letting society define them. I want to see more of that. There are so many amazing women out there who I look up to, who are doing that, and I want to be part of it.”
