Get ready to feel emotional about dumplings, because the next Disney•Pixar short is going to be a dumpling-centered treat. As reported in Entertainment Weekly, Bao, which will play before Incredibles 2, will tell the story of a woman whose children no longer live with her. One day, she finds that one of her handmade dumplings has come to life!
Prepare for some dumpling adorableness:
Literally the cutest thing we have ever seen!
Bao will be directed by storyboard artist Domee Shi, who has the distinction of being the first female director of a Pixar short. Shi drew from her background as a child of Chinese immigrants (she even calls her mother a “dumpling master!”) to tell this story. Shi told Entertainment Weekly:
“Often times it felt like my mom would treat me like a precious little dumpling, wanting to make sure I was safe, that I didn’t go out late, all that stuff. I just wanted to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story. The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”
Animators for the short even used footage of Shi’s own mother making dumplings as a reference while animating!
Entertainment Weekly also revealed the following concept images of the dumpling in many stages of expression:
We can’t wait to see this little cutie come to life in theatres before Incredibles 2 on June 15!
