Prepare yourself for August 10 because it’s going to be a Freaky Friday! On this epic date, the new Disney Channel Original Movie will premiere at 8:00 p.m. on Disney Channel and 12:01 a.m. on DisneyNOW and Disney Channel VOD.
That’s right, your favorite classic comedy about a mother and daughter’s hilarious body-swap is back, and this time as a musical starring Cozi Zuehlsdorff and Heidi Blickenstaff (who also starred in The Little Mermaid on Broadway and the stage production of Freaky Friday). Here’s a message from the two stars of the show:
Here’s what we know so far about the movie:
The story follows Blickenstaff as Katherine Blake, mother to teenage Ellie (played by Zuehlsdorff). Their adventure begins when Katherine won’t let Ellie join “The Hunt,” an epic all-night scavenger quest. But their problems reach a whole new level when the two swap bodies through a magical hourglass, which they accidentally shatter! To switch back, Katherine and Ellie must hunt down a matching hourglass, but not before literally spending a day in each other’s shoes—Ellie has to show face at school to avoid suspension and Katherine has an important magazine interview to promote her catering business. We can’t wait to see what happens!
Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of Original Programming at Disney Channel, said of Freaky Friday:
“This movie is a creative collaboration with our Theatrical colleagues who developed an original stage musical from a beloved story. Now we’ve added a fresh twist by adapting it again into a movie for kids and families—with Broadway talent on and off camera—that has the potential to be a classic DCOM for years to come.”
As for the music, we will get to watch the cast perform eight songs from the stage production of Freaky Friday, on top of two brand-new songs—including one co-written by Zuehlsdorff herself! Tom Kitt is the mastermind behind the music and Brian Yorkey wrote the Freaky Friday lyrics, so we expect only the best from the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning pair.
Here are a few songs that might just become our new favorite jams: “Just One Day,” a duet by Katherine and Ellie about the distance they feel between each other, “I Got This,” to kick off Katherine and Ellie’s wild day in each other’s shoes, “Oh Biology,” a song about being a teenager, “Go!” an ensemble number during “The Hunt,” and “At Last It’s Me,” an original pop song performed by Zuehlsdorff.
We can’t wait to laugh and sing our hearts out when Freaky Friday premieres on Disney Channel on August 10!
