Yesterday evening, at the world premiere of Disney’s Christopher Robin, Disney Legends Richard and Robert Sherman were honored with an eponymous soundstage at The Walt Disney Studios, and we were lucky enough to attend this significant celebration!
The Sherman brothers are the icons who composed the music for such Disney classics as Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, and the Winnie the Pooh series. In fact, Richard Sherman himself also composed three new songs for the upcoming classic Christopher Robin (which we will be first in line to see in theatres come August 3)!
The stage dedication opened with the Side Street Strutters band playing a medley of Sherman brothers classics like “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book, Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room and “It’s a Small World” songs, and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins. These were all songs which were recorded on this very same stage.
After this joyful performance, the Disneyland Band entered with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, who we are always very happy to see.
Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios Alan Horn made kind remarks about the Sherman brothers, who, as Horn stated, have for years been “bringing people together with their universally loved music.”
While Robert Sherman passed away in 2012, three of his children and four of his grandchildren were present for this heartfelt dedication. Richard Sherman, speaking on behalf of himself and Robert, said during his speech: “This is hallowed ground for me … this was the place that Bob and I truly had the chance to spread our creative wings.”
After Sherman’s thoughtful words, the stage marquee of the Sherman Brothers Stage was officially revealed:
Perfection! We were so honored to be present at the dedication of this stage to two very deserving Disney Legends.
