Have you watched Boy Band, the new music competition show on ABC, yet? If we could write a song about it, it would probably be called “You’re the One,” from the imaginary album “Dreams Come True,” because this is the television show we’ve been waiting for our whole lives. As longtime fans of boy bands, raised in the era of N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys, as well as ABC’s Making the Band, we truly believe that this show was tailor-made for us.
Boy Band follows 18 talented singers as they compete in groups, week after week, to ultimately become part of a five-person boy band, and is hosted by Rita Ora. Here are some reasons why we are already obsessed with this show.
The experienced architects.
Emma Bunton (of the Spice Girls), Nick Carter (of the Backstreet Boys), and multi-hyphenate music producer (and legend) Timbaland serve as “architects” of the show. They form the contestants into groups of six, give the competitors feedback, and even “shuffle” them into new groups, so we can see their compatibility with one another.
We love the knowledge that each architect brings to the table. The fact that they are so well-versed about the music industry from real-life experience is sure to help the contestants out a lot. Sometimes they even get involved—like when Timbaland beatboxed with J Hype in the premiere.
The talented contestants.
These guys really are the total package! They can sing, dance, perform, and connect with the audience in ways that every member of a boy band should. We’d expect nothing less from the members of our future favorite boy band.
The contestant shuffling.
The architects play a big role here, as we previously mentioned, by shuffling the contestants into new groups after eliminations. In doing so, they test out different combinations to see which contestants work best together. We can’t wait to see how this affects the individual sounds and performances of each contestant, and our impressions of them! This is the tried-and-true test of a boy bander: How do they work as a team?
The focus on dancing.
Since we grew up loving N*SYNC and Backstreet Boys, we like our boy bands to be able to bust a move. Luckily, Nick Carter is there to make sure the contestants’ dancing is up to par, including their “boy band pose.” Watch the video below to see Nick’s guidance in action.
Each episode has a different theme, meaning lots of opportunities to hear some of our favorite songs! We’ll try our best not to sing along (we have to be able to hear the contestants, after all).
“Survival” song performances.
Once the initial rounds of eliminations by the judges are complete and the show begins to air live, the architects will determine which two contestants are up for weekly elimination. Those two contestants then perform individually, competing for the viewers’ votes. This will be a chance to get to know them better, and see what makes them stand out.
That’s right—we, the humble television-watching denizens of our sofas, get to vote for which contestants we’d like to keep around. We’re basically the architects’ assistants. As we said before, dreams come true. Emma Bunton, can we get you anything?
Nick Carter, Nick Carter, Nick Carter.
Okay so, we know Nick is technically included in the above “architects” category, but he also deserves a category of his own. We are beyond excited to watch him on our TVs every week.
The winning group will receive a record contract with Hollywood Records. What this really means is that everybody wins! The contestants win a record contract, and we eventually get to listen to a record by the contestants we’ve been following and voting for!
We’ll also get a chance to hear the contestants perform their first single together in the finale of the show! We have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Boy Band, and we’ll be there every step of the way!
Boy Band airs on Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC. Will you be watching? Tell us in the comments!
